Language

Turkish is the most widely spoken of the Turkic languages. It is generally a SVO (subject-verb-object) oriented language which lacks grammatical gender. Modern standard Turkish is based on the dialect spoken in Istanbul. Turkish is strongly mutually intelligible with the other Oghuz Turkic languages, including Azerbaijani, Turkmen, Qashqai, Gagauz, and Balkan Gagauz Turkish. When translating Turkish, it is important to consider the intended audience and the associated honorifics.

Economic Significance

Turkish is spoken natively in Turkey, and it is also spoken by a widespread diaspora. Its mutual intelligibility with so many other languages make it an especially versatile and valuable language.

History

The Orkhon inscriptions, constructed by the Göktürks in the 8th century, are the earliest known Turkic inscriptions. Ottoman Turkish was profoundly influenced by Persian and Arabic but it would have largely been unintelligible in colloquial speech, at that time. The formation of Modern Turkey brought reforms to the Turkish language. Arabic and Persian loanwords were removed and replaced with Turkic words that had not been spoken in centuries.

Dialects

Modern standard Turkish is the predominant dialect. In the 1930s, a movement by the mass media and education system in Turkey had a leveling effect on the language. Still, scholars acknowledge dialectical variation. Modern standard Turkish is employed for most business and technical language translation.
